Tonic Sol FaVivaton Records set out to be an eclectic label with various types of artists, which goes a long way in explaining why they signed a great A capella group from Minneapolis. I was tapped to art direct and design. Ken Kragen was their manager. So I called my photographer friend Thomas Petillo and asked if he would like to go shoot in Minneapolis. Tonic Sol Fa had talent in spades but what they didn't have was a brand. So we spent the day knocking around Minneapolis and I saw a train pass overhead and I said 'Why don't you guys jump on the train and act like you're in the Beatles movie for A Hard Days Night.' They did it and it worked magnificently. I got everything I wanted with that art direction, including what became their emblematic logo of walking down the street. |
